How Elevation Gain Can Affect Someone During Trekking?
Elevation gain can affect someone during trekking significantly by creating problems like:
- Shortness of breath: When you move higher and gain elevation, the oxygen level decreases as the air pressure decreases. In such conditions, the body doesn’t get enough oxygen, causing shortness of breath.
- Tiredness: less oxygen after elevation causes fatigue in the body to ascend. If you feel like you cannot trek more, such a condition can affect your overall trekking condition.
- Sleep Disturbance: Elevation gain can create sleeping problems; you’ll have difficulty falling asleep or even waking at midnight, creating a sleeping disturbance and causing tiredness during trekking hours.
- Increasing heart rate: As your body gains elevation, the heart has to perform its work faster by pumping sufficient oxygen, causing an increasing heart rate during trekking times.
Acute Mountain Sickness
Among the problems caused during the trekking, Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS) is shared among all the trekkers. t high altitudes, due to reduced oxygen levels, you may face this problem.
During the trek, listening to your body and observing whether your body is getting any symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness will help you reduce the chance of worsening the condition. The symptoms of Acute Mountain sickness include difficulty sleeping, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue.
Reasons:
- Climbing at a high altitude rapidly without getting proper acclimatization
- It is not being in an excellent physical condition.
- They need to be adequately hydrated.
- Unpredictable weather conditions
High Altitude Pulmonary Edema
Altitude Pulmonary Edema(HAPE) is more dangerous than Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS), as in this condition, your lung function will be interrupted due to the capillaries display within the lungs spilling and securing liquid within the lungs, causing problems with breathing.
High Altitude Pulmonary Edema generally causes pain in the respiratory system when you are above 2500m. High Altitude Pulmonary Edema(HAPE) symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, lips getting blue, and cough.
Reasons:
- Gaining elevation without letting the body be used to change temperature
- Sudden change in temperature
- Dehydration and lack of nutrition
High-altitude Altitude Cerebral Edema
High Altitude Cerebral Edema(HACE) is the most dangerous and challenging among the included altitude-related sicknesses. APE occurs when you go above 3600m; it can even take someone’s life if it is not appropriately treated at the right time.
It is dangerous due to fluids beginning to build up in your brain, causing it to swell and creating problems in the nervous system. Unstable mental condition, loss of coordination with the body, inability to walk, and blurry vision are symptoms of High Altitude Cerebral Edema.
Reasons:
- Due to Alcohol and drug consumption
- Reduced oxygen level
- The body cannot handle the sudden changes when going lower to higher altitude.
Accommodation During the ABC trek:
During the trekking in Annapurna Base Camp, options for Accommodation are local tea houses, which the local people of the region run. The tea house provides a comfortable twin-sharing bed and standard rooms. The shower is available in the tea house, providing a bucket and solar shower daily. During the winter season, in a tea house, there is a heater under the dining table, not in the room.
WI-FI and Mobile network during ABC trek:
WI-FI
Due to the Remote Location, the wifi facility can be limited during the Annapurna Base Camp trek. you’ll stay in the tea house; those houses provide wifi service, but you must pay extra for the internet connection on your device.
Mobile Network:
During the Annapurna Base Camp trek, the mobile network may not be available as the signal will not be there. cell and NTC are the common sim cards in Nepal; the signal varies depending on where you reach.

Drinking water facility during ABC trek
Mineral water can be found until Chhomrong in the Annapurna Base Camp trek, but you’ll get boiled and filtered water after Chhomrong. Avoid drinking water without a filter and boiling it, as it may cause problems in your body.
