Know Before You Go

Best Season to Trek

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the perfect seasons for trekking in the Annapurna region. Both these seasons offer perfect views of the Himalayas and surrounding hills.

Spring (March-May)

The Spring season is best for trekking in Nepal. This season is popular for trekking in the Annapurna region due to clear visibility of the Himalayan range, dry trekking trail and perfect weather for day walking. Days are crisp and hot, and nights are cooler as you gain altitude.

During this season, the hills are colorful due to rhododendron and other wildflowers blooming. The visibility of the Himalayas in the distance is clear and crisp in the atmosphere, making it perfect for photogenic travellers. The trails are less crowded compared to the autumn season, so you can enjoy the beauty of nature calmly.

Autumn (September-November)

The Autumn season is the perfect season for trekking in the Annapurna region. This season offers perfect weather, temperature, and crystal-clear visibility of the Himalayas, hills, and valleys. Days are warm and nights are cooler. After the monsoon season, the trails are lush and green, and the skies are clear.

This season is a favourite among the photographers and nature-loving trekkers. Also, during this season, 2 major festivals of Nepal occur, i.e., Dashain and Tihar, providing a great opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture and traditions.

Other Season

Winter (December-February)

Trekking in the Winter season is possible but challenging due to cold temperatures, so you need to be an experienced trekker. Some trails may be covered in snow, particularly above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet), which can make trekking more difficult. This season sees fewer trekkers, offering a more peaceful experience, but it requires careful planning and preparation for cold weather.

Monsoon (June-August)

During monsoon season, heavy rainfall occurs, making the trail slippery, and there is a very high chance of landslides in the hilly region. Also, the visibility is poor. While some adventurous trekkers may choose to trek during this time, it is generally not recommended for families or those seeking a more comfortable experience.

Food and Accommodation

During the Annapurna Family Trekking, you will enjoy meals at local teahouses that provide warm, hearty, and nutritious food to keep you energized on the trail. While the menu options are basic, you can expect to savor authentic Nepali cuisine, including hot tea, soups, bread, dal-bhat (rice and lentils), and seasonal vegetables. The foods taste very basic yet tasty and perfect for children and elderly members.

When you’re in the city, you’ll have access to a variety of cuisines at fine dining restaurants, allowing you to indulge in a broader range of culinary experiences.

For accommodation during the trek, you’ll stay in local teahouses run by the community. While the accommodations are basic, they offer a warm and comfortable atmosphere. Rooms are small but cozy, featuring wooden beds with mattresses, pillows, and warm blankets. It’s advisable to carry a sleeping bag for added comfort.

Bathrooms are shared and typically consist of squat toilets. As you ascend to higher altitudes, facilities such as hot showers and Wi-Fi become unavailable, and electricity may be limited. During peak trekking season, you may also need to share rooms with fellow trekkers.

Permits and Travel Insurance

You’ll need 2 permits while trekking in the Annapurna Region.

  • Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS)
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is a must while trekking in the Annapurna region. Travel Insurance is important because it protects against unexpected events that arise during the trekking days and provides emergency evacuation coverage. Your travel insurance must cover these things:

  • Helicopter Evacuation Coverage
  • Medical Coverage
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption
  • Coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage

Always choose the right insurance company that covers all the emergency/medical coverages. Before signing the insurance papers, always read all the terms and conditions that they state to facilitate their customers. It’s advisable to purchase travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. This ensures you are covered for any potential cancellations or changes before your departure.

Trekking Difficulty

The Annapurna Family Trekking is generally moderate. The trekking hours are short and easy, considering a family trek. Our expert team carefully chooses routes depending on the age of all family members. The trek to the Australian Camp is easy, going upwards and passing various small villages.

The terrain includes a mix of gentle slopes and some steeper sections, but trekking days are typically shorter, ranging from 4 to 6 hours. While the trails are accessible, trekkers should be prepared for varying weather conditions and altitude challenges. With proper preparation, families can enjoy a rewarding and memorable trekking experience in the stunning Annapurna region.

Can Kids Hike the Annapurna Family Trekking Route?

The Annapurna Family Trekking is best for all age groups and all trekkers. Children can also go for a hike and enjoy the new environment that offers the stunning beauty of the Himalayas and some fresh air.

Taking care of a child is a must, and parents must be careful while trekking with a child. Take proper precautions, be careful, and ensure the comfort and safety of their kids on trekking days. And carry the necessary gear while trekking with a child.

Always choose those agencies that provide you with better facilities, safety and customizable itineraries. We, Boundless Adventure, design an itinerary that is suitable for children and older people.
