Kathmandu to Jiri Route

The route from Jiri to Everest Base Camp is the historic, original trek. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay once walked the legendary trail before their historic 1953 Everest summit. Before the establishment of the Lukla Airport, all expeditions to Everest had to go through Jiri. The route was once called a "Gateway to Everest."

The journey starts with an 8-10-hour bus ride from Kathmandu to Jiri, heading eastward towards Bhaktapur via the Araniko Highway. The road is quite bumpy, offering glimpses of terraced fields, rivers, and traditional villages, giving you a taste of the vibrant Nepalese landscape and taking you to the Dolakha district.

From Jiri, the path passes several stops, including Shivalaya, Junbensi, Nunthala, and Bupsa, then reaches Phakding. From there, the modern Everest Base Camp route starts, following paths to Namche, Tengboche, Lobuche, and finally to EBC. In return, take a flight from Lukla to Kathmandu and end the trek.

You can take a public bus, a shared jeep, or a private jeep to Jiri. The cost of the transportation varies depending on your ride selection.

Cost of the Jiri to EBC Trek

Depending on your requirement, the price of the 19-day Jiri to Everest Base Camp varies. However, the price range of accommodation and food facilities during your trek is almost constant.

If you want high-end accommodation and a helicopter ride to KTM-Lukla-KTM, the cost is higher than for a regular trek. If you want to trek without compromising on any service, it costs more.

Contact Boundless Adventure and inform us of your requirements. Based on that, we will design the itinerary. We are always accessible and can provide a range of services.

Best Season

Trekking in the Everest region during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) is the perfect choice for any trekker to make. Both of these seasons offer the most incredible views of the Himalayas, green hills, and valleys.

Spring (March-May)

The Spring season is the best season for trekking in the Everest region of Nepal. The spring season offers one of the most beautiful scenic views of the Himalayas, including green hills, forests, and the Sherpa villages. The temperature during this season is very comfortable for day walking on the trail. Nights are cooler as you gain altitude.

The trails are colourful after the rhododendrons and wildflowers bloom in the forest, and the surroundings become picturesque, perfect for photographers. The trail is less crowded compared to the autumn season.

Autumn (September-November)

The autumn season is perfect for trekking in the Jiri to EBC trek. This season offers crystal-clear views of the Himalayas. The temperature during this season is very comfortable for day walking on the trail. Nights are cooler as you gain altitude. Most trekkers around the world like to trek during this season due to the clear visibility of the Himalayas, the dry, comfortable trails, and postcard-perfect views of the surroundings.

After the monsoon season, the weather gets so clear and crisp that any traveller can enjoy stunning aerial views from a distance and capture each beauty through their camera lens.

Other Season

The monsoon and winter seasons are not considered for trekking in any high-altitude region. Trekking during these seasons is risky and requires good knowledge of trekking equipment and the trail, and, of course, good experience trekking in the high-altitude region.

Both seasons lead to difficulties such as heavy rainfall, landslides, snowfall, and slippery trails, which make trekking difficult. To trek during these seasons, you must hire an experienced guide and carry all necessary equipment.

Trekking Difficulty

While planning the Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek, it's essential to understand the level of difficulty involved. The trek is considered moderate to challenging. The trek reaches up to 5,550m, and the weather becomes unpredictable. It is difficult for beginners to trek for several days in the high-altitude region, climbing each day.

A trek that takes you through steep ascents and rocky paths, and trekking in a high-altitude region leads to altitude sickness. Proper acclimatization is essential to prevent AMS. Also, as you trek in higher altitudes, the weather is unpredictable, so plan accordingly and carry the right gear for the trek.

Physical Preparation

To ensure a successful trekking experience, adequate physical preparation is crucial. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

  • Engage in cardiovascular fitness activities such as running, cycling, or swimming to build endurance.

  • Focus on leg strength through exercises such as squats, lunges, and step-ups.

  • Go on hikes with a loaded backpack to simulate trekking conditions.

  • Incorporate stretching and yoga to improve flexibility and prevent injuries.

Safety Tips for the Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek

Although the right gear and proper preparation help make trekking days to EBC smooth, you still need to focus on a few things to reach the destination without any difficulty.

  • First and foremost, the thing is proper acclimatization. Plan acclimatization days into your trekking itinerary so you have enough time to rest during the trek days. Enough acclimatization during the EBC trek helps your body to adjust to the higher-altitude region.

  • Always carry a water bottle and drink plenty of water during the trek. As you trek higher, your body may become dehydrated due to the cold weather and the continuous walking for several hours. Hydrating enough helps your body maintain its energy level.

  • Walking at the same speed during the trek helps to maintain your body and helps prevent altitude sickness. Walking at the same speed allows your body to adapt to the changing environment.

  • Always carry nutritious snacks such as nuts, biscuits, and energy bars in your trekking bag. During the trekking days, if you feel hungry or less energetic, you can have a snack and walk smoothly on the trail.

  • If you feel any difficulty breathing or feel uncomfortable in your body, please stop and take a moment to rest. If needed, descend quickly and inform your guide.

Food and Accommodation

Food and accommodation during the trek must be comfortable and nutritious. Eating nutritious food and getting good sleep help trekkers maintain their energy and feel comfortable during the trek.

In city areas like Kathmandu and Namche Bazaar, you'll find private rooms with most of the modern facilities. Also, the food options in the lower elevation are wider, and you'll eat a variety of food in your lodge.

Accommodation

Most teahouses have common rooms, and a few offer hot showers for a small extra charge, along with bathroom amenities. As you trek higher, the facilities become very basic yet comforting. You'll experience the best services in a limited space.

Food

Food is available at the same teahouses, and it's mostly as listed in the Menu: pasta, soups, a few other Western dishes, and so on. The menu may vary by location, but a vegetarian option is guaranteed. The food they provide is full of nutrients and carbohydrates that keep your energy stable during the trekking days. For drinking water, always carry a water bottle and water purification tablets.

Solo/Guided Trek

Trekking solo in the Everest region is possible. Solo treks allow trekkers to connect with locals, spend more time acclimating, and avoid crowded trails during trekking days. Solo treks help trekkers to communicate with fellow trekkers and enjoy the new company. Boundless Adventure will arrange all the permits and paperwork for your independent trekking and allow you to trek in the Everest region.

While solo trekking is possible, a guided trek is recommended. Experienced guides make the journey safer, share local culture, and help you navigate the trail smoothly. Boundless Adventure offers experienced guides familiar with the local area and the trail. They help you navigate the route, interact with the locals, and in emergencies, and they carry your backpack if needed.

Permits and Travel Insurance

For trekking in the Everest region, trekkers must obtain the following permits:

Apart from these, the Gaurishankar Conservation Area will be accessed while traversing via Jiri, which requires you to get another permit. All of these permits can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu. Allow your trekking agency to arrange all the required permits and other paperwork.

Travel Insurance

Trekkers must obtain travel insurance with a well-reputed insurance company. The travel insurance helps to cover all the expenses in case of an emergency, loss of baggage, or medical emergencies. Your travel insurance must cover the following things:

  • Helicopter Evacuation
