Kathmandu to Jiri Route
The route from Jiri to Everest Base Camp is the historic and original route of the trek. The legendary trail was once walked by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay before their historic 1953 Everest summit. Before the establishment of the Lukla Airport, all expeditions to Everest had to go through Jiri. The route was once called a “Gateway to Everest.”
The journey starts with an 8-10 hour bus ride from Kathmandu to Jiri heading eastward towards Bhaktapur via Araniko Highway. The condition of the road is quite bumpy offers glimpse of terraced fields, rivers, and traditional villages, giving you a taste of the vibrant Nepalese landscape and taking you to the Dolakha district.
From Jiri, the path leads toward several stops like Shivalaya, Junbensi, Nunthala, Bupsa, and reaches Phakding. From there, the modern Everest Base Camp route starts and follows the route to Namche, Tengboche, Lobuche, and then finally to EBC. In return, take a flight from Lukla to Kathmandu and end the trek.
You can take a public bus, a shared jeep, or a private jeep for a drive to Jiri. The cost of the transportation varies depending on your ride selection.
