Chola Pass Trekking Information for an 18-day trek

Crossing the Chola Pass is one of the most demanding treks in the Everest region, yet rewarding for 18 days. Reaching an altitude of 5,420 meters (17,782 feet) above sea level, this pass requires strong physical fitness and mental durability.

As you approach the pass, you may feel dizzy and find it difficult to breathe. Therefore, you need to hydrate yourself and eat energy bars to replenish energy in your body.

For a beginner, the Chola Pass trek is really difficult to complete, so hiring an expert guide along with the help of porters, who will assist you on the trekking days, is highly recommended.

To cross the Chola Pass, you must start early. The route to reach the summit is rocky, steep, and high possibility of having some snow on the way, which would make it very hard to walk in high-altitude areas.

When reaching close to the summit, there can be some wind in high gear that would make walking even harder. After climbing the summit, there is a possibility of having a slippery route on the other side of the Chola Pass.

Trekking Difficulty

The Chola Pass is a difficult trek in the Everest region. This is an unforgettable adventure due to its high altitude (5,420 m). Trekkers walk for 6-8 hours daily for 18 days, making the trek adventurous. Ensure you’re in good physical shape and acclimatize well to avoid altitude sickness.

You’ll navigate rugged trails carved into the mountainside, with dramatic drops and sparkling glaciers around you. Maintain a steady pace while ascending and descending for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Physical Preparation

For trekking in the Chola Pass, you must be physically fit. You need to get yourself ready to go on a trek to the Chola Pass before confirmation.

  • You must do cardiovascular exercise to make your body strong.

  • Go for a short hike during the weekend. Practice with a backpack to get used to the load you will carry during the trek.

  • Focus on strength training, such as leg exercises, core workouts, and upper body strength.

  • Practice yoga to develop and flex your body.

  • Some healthy snacks in your bag and hydrate yourself to get ready for a long, challenging yet rewarding day.

  • Try to have a positive attitude toward the difficulties you may experience on the trek.

Best Season to Trek

Choosing the right season for trekking in the Chola Pass is vital. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the best seasons for trekking, offering mild temperatures, clear visibility, and well-maintained trails.

Spring (March-May)

Spring is the best season for trekking in the Chola Pass. The weather is cool and crisp; the temperature is comfortable for walking long days in the high-altitude trail. Days are warmer and nights are cooler as you gain altitude.

Spring features blooming wildflowers and clear skies. The colourful surroundings and clear views of the Himalayas add more fun and adventure to the trek. The trails are not crowded compared to the autumn, so trekkers can enjoy nature in calm surroundings.

Autumn (September-November)

Autumn is the perfect season for trekking in Nepal. During autumn, most of the trekking trails are crowded, but the stunning views of the Himalayas leave you awed. The weather is comfortable, and the temperature is cool and crisp. The crystal-clear views of the Himalayas and the surrounding area are perfect for a photography-loving trekker.

After the monsoon season, the weather gets clear, and the visibility is excellent. Trekkers can participate in the big festivals of Nepal, i.e., Dashain and Tihar.

Other Season

Monsoon (June-August) is less favourable due to heavy rainfall and poor visibility, while winter (December-February) poses harsh conditions and low visibility. In both of these seasons, trekking is not recommended in the high-altitude region of Nepal. A highly experienced guide with the right gear and a well-experienced guide can plan a trek. On clear days, the visibility of the magnificent Himalayas and the surrounding area stole your hearts.

Food and Accommodation

During the Chola Pass trek, you’ll be staying in a local teahouse and having meals there. In lower elevations, the food and accommodation are top-notch. You’ll get a variety of food options and a very comfortable private bedroom with all modern amenities.

As you trek higher, the options for food are much fewer, and accommodation is basic. You’ll sleep in a small, cozy but warm room that has a comfortable bed with a warm blanket. During peak season, the room needs to be shared with fellow trekkers. Bathrooms are shared and less possibility of hot showers and laundry in the teahouses.

For food, there are limited options like authentic Sherpa food, Tibetan Bread, yak milk, tea, soups, dal bhat, noodles and many other available items. You’ll eat freshly cooked meals full of carbs and nutrients.

Hydrate yourself enough. Carry a waterbottle and water purification tablets while trekking in the high-altitude region.

Permits and Travel Insurance

Trekkers in the Everest region must obtain three permits:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

  • Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit

  • Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) Permit

These permits can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu. For a stress-free trekking experience, let Boundless Adventure arrange all necessary permits and paperwork for you.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance for the Chola Pass Trek is highly recommended. It is to be taken for the risk it covers for trekking at high altitude, emergency evacuation, and other contingencies common to trekking. Your travel insurance policy should cover all the standard things, including medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, personal liability, and emergency evacuation, including helicopter rescue if needed.

Altitude Sickness and Safety Measures

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), can occur when you ascend to high altitudes, typically above 2,500 meters, too quickly. This condition is particularly relevant for trekkers on the Everest Base Camp trek, which reaches an elevation of 5,364 meters. The reduced oxygen levels at higher altitudes can lead to a range of symptoms that can affect your trekking experience.

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness

  • Headache

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Dizziness or light-headedness

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Shortness of breath even at rest

  • Confusion or decreased consciousness

  • Persistent cough with pinkish sputum

  • Loss of coordination (ataxia)

Safety Measures

  • Ascend no more than 300-500 meters (1,000-1,600 feet) per day above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). Include acclimatization at Namche and Dingboche in your itinerary.

  • Drink enough water, 3-4 liters per day, to maintain your energy level while trekking for long days in the Everest region.

  • Avoid consuming alcohol or caffeine products, which can lead to dehydration in your body.

  • Acclimatization is crucial while trekking in the high-altitude region of Nepal.  If possible, hike to a higher elevation during the day and return to a lower elevation to sleep.

  • Walking slowly and steadily helps your body to adapt to the high-altitude weather and helps your body to adjust to the climate.

  • If you feel any dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or headache, stop at that point and rest your body for a while.

  • Recognize the symptoms of altitude sickness, and if symptoms worsen, descend to a lower altitude quickly.

  • Eat high-carbohydrate foods that help to maintain energy levels in your body and improve oxygen availability. Always carry snacks in your bag.

  • Always have pain relief and Diamox pills in your bag. Please consult with your doctor on the implementation of these.

  • If you feel difficulty breathing or in case of severe altitude sickness, call for emergency evacuation by a helicopter. Ensure that your travel insurance covers these expenses.

Guided Trek

First and best trekking experience in Annapurna

t was our first trekking experience in Nepal, and I am delighted that the journey was exceptional. As an experienced trekker, we chose a popular trekking point, Annapurna Base Camp. The famous trek with a reputable trekking agency, Boundless Adventure, was commendable.

The crew members of Boundless welcomed us at Tribhuvan International Airport with warm hospitality. From the start to the end of our journey, they cared for us and managed every logistics. The trek was cheerfulness. Everything was decidedly satisfying, from the drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara to Nayapul to the beginning of the trek. The smiling mountain range, simple villages and way of living, birds chirping, and fresh air were our companions after our friendly guide. We strongly recommend Boundless Adventure and ABC Trek.

Majestic beauty of Ghorepani Poon Hill

I heard a lot about the beauty of Nepal from many of my friends. Luckily, last October, I got to experience heaven with my two friends. One of my friends has already come to Nepal and has trekked through Boundless Adventure, and we also chose the same company for our journey. We planned an extended vacation but had to leave as soon as possible due to some issues. Mr.Dambar helped us a lot while selecting our package. After lots of discussions and going through information about each trekking destination, we chose to go for the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek. The Ghorepani Poon Hill is the best for people like us with limited time. The trek was a perfect mixture of little adventure and nature’s beauty. The early sunrise view and its ray on the summit of the mountain still satisfy my mind—a most recommended trekking destination and trekking agency, Boundless Adventure.

Upper Mustang were breathtaking

My friends and I recently completed the Upper Mustang trek with Boundless Adventure, and the experience was truly unforgettable. From the moment I inquired about the trek to the end of the trip, the team handled everything perfectly and professionally. Our guide was knowledgeable, professional, and well-versed in the history, culture, and geography of Upper Mustang.

The Upper Mustang region was breathtaking, and Boundless Adventure was amazing in customizing our itinerary to ensure we had plenty of time to explore the area. As there were five people in our group, the company gave us a group discount, which made their excellent service even more affordable. We are so thankful for their exceptional kindness and service at a reasonable cost.
