The Lake is 4,575 m (15,010 ft) above sea level and covers an area of 250 square km (97 sq mi). The Sutlej River, also known asd Langqen Zangbo) flows northwest of Rakshastal.
The name of the Lake means ""ake of the Demon." The Lake is also called Rakshal Tal, and there is a belief that the demon of Lanka, Ravan, has done severe penance on the Lake. The Tibetan people named the Lake Lagngar Cho or Lhanag Tso, meaning "the dark lake of poison." Furthermore, due to the flora and fauna around the Lake, its lifeless surroundings led Tibetans to call it the "ghost lake." Visitors are advised to be respectful in these areas to avoid accidents.
Rakshastal consists of four islands: Topzerma, Dola, Lachato (Nadzhado), and Dosarba. During the winter, locals in the area use the island as a yak pasture. Travelers undertaking the Parikrama of Mount Kailash should pass through Rakshastal.
