Day: 02 Explore In Lhasa

You’ll explore Lhasa’s cultural and historical sites from the second day. After breakfast, you’ll leave the hotel for a full day of sightseeing at Lhasa. First, you’ll drive to the Potala Palace.

For a long time, Potala Palace was the residence of Tibet’s spiritual and political leader, Dalai Lama. The Potala Palace is above the Lhasa River at the top of the hill. The palace is also the highest place in the world, lying 12,139 ft above sea level.

Jokhang Temple, also called Qoikang Monastery, is another exploration point after the Potala temple. The temple of Jokhang was constructed during the ruling time of King Songtsen Gampo in 641 CE. The Jokhang Temple is of great importance to the Buddhist people of Tibet.

Barkhor Market Place is the final exploration site of the day. Barkhor Market Place lies in the ancient city of Lhasa and has more than 1300 years of history. Barkhor Market Place is famous for its pilgrimage route and the largest market in Tibet.

After a pleasant exploration day, you’ll be back to your hotel. After dinner at the hotel, you’ll sleep comfortably at Lhasa’s hotel.

After a pleasant sleep at the Lhasa Hotel, you’ll have a hearty breakfast early in the morning. After breakfast, you’ll drive for another beautiful exploration day at Lhasa. The third day is another full sightseeing day. First, you’ll go for a Sera Monastery visit.

Situated north of Lhasa, Sera monastery is the prettiest of the Lhasa. More than 5000 monks used to reside inside Sera monastery, but after the cultural revolution, just more than 100 monks have stayed. Sera Me College, Sera Ngakpa College, and Sera Je College are the three colleges at the Sera complex, among which Sera Je College is the largest.

Drepung Monastery is another destination you’ll visit after exploring Sera Monastery. Situated at the Gambo Utse Mountain, Drepung Monastery was the residence of the Dalai Lama before the construction of the Potala Palace.

Your day’s exploration ends with a Barkhor Market visit once again. Visiting the Barkhor Market is to provide you with a chance to shop. You’ll drive back to your hotel and have dinner, then sleep.

Exploration Day at Lhasa

You’ll get two days to explore Lhasa in detail. Even on the landing at Lhasa, you’ll have time for exploration and roam around the area where you’ll stay. But as per our itinerary, your exploration day is on the second and third of the journey.

On the first exploration day, you’ll visit some of Lhasa’s historic and culturally significant areas. Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Market Place are the three major areas of Lhasa you’ll tour over on the first day.

The second day’s exploration of Lhasa begins with a tour around Sera Monastery, located north of Lhasa. Sera Monastery has lots of attractions to visit. After visiting Sera Monetary, you’ll head for an exploration of Drepung Monastery, and the day ends. Finally, you can visit Barkhor Market if you want to shop.

Potala Palace Exploration

Your first Place to explore on the Lhasa tour is Potala Palace. The palace is an extraordinary architectural and cultural landmark of Lhasa. Potala Palace is the only one in the world at 3700 m above sea level.

The palace is worth visiting and offers stunning scenery as the temple is located at the hilltop of Marpo Ri, a Red Hill. At the Potala Palace, you can explore the two main sections of the Place: the Red Palace and the White Palace. During the visit, you’ll learn that the Red Place is a religious site with stupas and holy items. Walking through the Barkhor marketplace feels different. You’ll get a strange feeling whenever you walk around the street. As you walk through the market, you’ll see various items for sale, including Tibetan handicrafts, religious objects, clothing, jewelry, and gifts.

One of the highlights of visiting Barkhor Market Place is witnessing religious pilgrims walking around the Jokhang Temple. The encircling around the temple is called “kora,” which includes walking clockwise around the temple, spinning prayer wheels, and chanting mantras.

Drepung Monastery

In the final part of your exploration of Lhasa, you’ll visit Drepung monastery, the largest Monastery in Tibet. The Monastery lies 5 km west of Lhasa, at the Gambo Utse mountain. Founded in 1416, the Monastery has a significant role in Tibet’s religious, cultural, and political history.

Jokhang Temple:

Sera Monastery:

Tashilunpo Monastery:

Tashi Lhunpo Monastery is a historically and culturally significant monastery in Shigatse city of Tibet. The Dalai Lama founded the Monastery in 1447; thus, the Monastery is an important religious site in Tibet. Furthermore, among six great Gelugpa monasteries of Tibet, the Tashilhunpo is also one of them.

Pelkor Chode Monastery Khumbum Stupa

Palkhor monastery, which means “auspicious monastery” in Tibet, lies northeast of Gyantse County and south of Lhasa. In the history of Tibetan Buddhism, the Monastery holds great importance. When you are in Pelkor Chode monastery, Khumbum Stupa is a must-visit site that is acclaimed as the “king of pagoda.”

Ganden Monastery

At Dagzê County of Lhasa, Ganden Monastery is one of the six main monasteries of the Gelug order. The meaning of Ganden in the Tibetan language is “Pure Land of Tushita “. The Lama Tsongkhapa meditated after the Monastery’s foundation; thus, the Monastery is a tremendous religious site in Tibet.

Ramoche Monastery

Drak Yerpa

The cave is one of Padmasambhava’s three most important places for spiritual growth.

Rongbuk Monastery

Rongbuk monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma group in the Shigatse District and near the base of the north side of Mount Everest of Tibet. Rongbuk Monastery was an important pilgrimage place for Sherpas residing on the south sides of Everest in Nepal’s Khumbu region. Previously, the Monastery was quite active with Buddhist teachings through specific seasons of the year.
