Seven of the ten World Heritage Sites enlisted in UNESCO are in Kathmandu. However, traveling around Nepal’s heritage sites helps you learn about its historical background.

Lumbini, where Lord Buddha was born in 623 BC, is a religious place where you can explore the kingdom where Siddartha Gautam lived and learn the knowledge and wisdom shared by Lord Buddha regarding the Buddhist religion.

List of UNESCO heritage sites in Nepal.

There are 10 UNESCO heritage sites in Nepal. Seven are located within Kathmandu Valley, while the other 3 are spread across the Country. Based on their significance, these heritages are classified into natural and historical heritages.

Pashupatinath

Dedicated to the prominent Hindu deity, Lord Shiva, Pashupatinath is sacred to Hindus. The literal translation of Pashupatinath is Lord of animals. This shrine is believed to have been built around 400 A.D. Styled in alluring pagoda style, and there are over 500 temples scattered along the area. The temple is built on the Bagmati River’s bank, one of the tributaries of the holy River of Hindus.

Swayambhunath

The name Swayambhunath translates to “self-existent,” and this unique Buddhist monument is believed to have emerged by itself. The present-day memorial dates back to 460 A.D. This monument is situated at the western end of Kathmandu Valley and rises above 100 meters from the surface level of Kathmandu Valley.

A mythological statement advocates that Swayabhunath was born out of a lotus flower that emerged in the middle of Kathmandu Lake. It has since been a revered site for Buddhist pilgrims. Swayambhunath stupa is a masterpiece of architecture. It is based on a dome followed by a cube structure, which is pointy at the top. The cube is painted in all directions, signifying the eyes of Buddha, and the whole structure is decorated with Buddhist prayer flags.

Boudhanath

Boudhanath is a significant Buddhist shrine and Nepal’s most prominent monument. Located in the northeastern end of Kathmandu Valley, it is a revered site for Buddhist pilgrims. The centerpiece of Boudhanath is a pyramid-shaped stupa built on top of a dome.

This stupa is encircled by a circular path called “Kora,” which means walking in circles. The outer vicinity of the stupa is filled with spinning prayer wheels, which you will find in most Buddhist sites. As a revered site and tourist destination, Boudhanath is famed for its religious significance and artistic marvels.

Kathmandu Durbar Square

Durbar Square refers to the palaces, temples, courtyards, and shrines complex. Kathmandu Durbar Square is a historical monument that portrays the art and craft of the Malla regimes built between the 12th and 18th century A.D. These palaces were royal residences during the Malla regime and are a living museum today.

Mallas are considered higher caste Newars, and the palace’s detailing of art and architecture depicts typical Newari artworks. The most prominent shrines here are Hanuman Dhoka Palace, Kumari Chok, Taleju Temple, Basantapur Tower, and Kal Bhairav Temple.

Patan Durbar Square

Patan is the royal residence of the ancient Lalitpur kingdom. Patan Durbar Square is a complex of royal palaces, Hindu shrines, architectural buildings, and artifacts dating centuries ago. Like Kathmandu Durbar Square, this area has been preserved as a historical landmark site with its astounding artistic amusement. It is situated to the south of Kathmandu across the Bagmati River.

The Durbar Square consists of centuries-old monuments, including the Krishna Temple, Patan Museum, Mul Chok, Golden Temple, Mahaboudhha Temple, and Kwa Bahal. As a UNESCO heritage site, the ambiance in and around the Durbar Square takes you back to the times of ancient Malla kings.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square

Nestled about 15 kilometers to the west is another Newari kingdom, Bhaktapur. Locally called “Bhadgaon,” this historic city is rich in culture, tradition, and history. Similar to Kathmandu Durbar Square and Patan Durbar Square, there are a series of temples, palaces, and monuments that date back to the time of Malla kings between the 12th and 18th centuries.

Bhaktapur’s once administrative hub and royal residence is now a keynote attraction for travelers. 55 Window Palace, Vatsala Temple, Nyatapola Temple, Bhairav Nath Temple, and Singha Durbar are among the notable monuments of Bhaktapur Durbar Square.

Changunarayan

Changunarayan is one of the oldest Hindu shrines in Kathmandu Valley devoted to the Hindu deity, Lord Vishnu. It dates back to the 4th century by the Licchavhi dynasty kings. This temple’s architecture is unlike what you would find elsewhere in Kathmandu. It blends in the artistic amusement of the Licchavi and Malla dynasties, giving it an authentic shape. The main temple’s doors, windows, pillars, roofs, and struts portray impressive architectural figures.

Views from Chandragiri

The altitude of Chandragiri is 2100 meters above the sea level. Views from Chandragiri offer a breathtaking panorama of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayan range beyond. Situated southwest of Kathmandu, Nepal, Chandragiri Hill provides visitors with a stunning vantage point to witness the majestic peaks of the Langtang range, including Dorje Lakpa, Gauri Shankar, and Langtang Lirung. Similarly, Mount Manaslu and the Ganesh Himalayan range from the Chandragiri can be seen.

Additionally, the hill features a cable car ride, making it easily accessible to tourists seeking a memorable experience amidst nature’s grandeur. Whether it’s sunrise or sunset, the vistas from Chandragiri never fail to captivate with their sheer beauty and serenity.

Chitwan National Park

The southwestern vicinity of Nepal is filled with dense tropical and subtropical forests. This area was established as a national park in 1973, the first national park in Nepal. The dense forest encapsulates the area with numerous rare flora and fauna.

This area is famed for the Royal Bengal Tiger, horned Rhino, Asian Elephant, Gharial, Deer, and other animals. The rarity of this national park makes it popular for activities like Jungle Safaris, Nature walks, Bird Watching, and elephant-related activities

Journey in Nepal's Heritage

After our pleasant seven days of touring the Nepal Heritage sites, we just returned to Italy. We visited Kathmandu’s and Chitwan heritage sites, and the tour was a truly mesmerizing experience. Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa, Bouddhanath Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square are the four prominent heritage sites we visited in Kathmandu. From Kathmandu, we drive to Chitwan. We explored Chitwan National Park, which is among the UNESCO heritage sites. We explored the national park and got involved in bird watching, jungle safari on the elephant’s back, canoeing, and jungle walking. We also participated in the Tharu cultural program. We had an enriching experience with Boundless Adventure in Nepal’s heritage sites and recommended others for exceptional heritage exploration of Nepal.

Reviewing Nepal's Cultural Heritage Sites

Nepal has always been my favorite destination to travel to. I have gone to various trekking areas in Nepal, but this time, I tried something new with my wife; we took a trip to Nepal’s heritage sites. I booked the tour with my favorite travel partner, Boundless Adventure, as I have had a close relationship with them since I started trekking in Nepal. Our Nepal Heritage tour was one week, with arrival and departure days. We visited Kathmandu’s rich heritage site on the first part of the tour. After visiting and learning deeply about the culture and tradition of Kathmandu, we moved to Chitwan National Park. Jungle Safari on the elephant’s back was the highlight of visiting Chitwan National Park. Also, canoeing, bird watching, and visiting the elephant breeding center and Tharu communities were enriching experiences. I wholeheartedly recommend Boundless Adventure for high-class heritage tours and other adventures in Nepal.

A Heritage Tour Experience

As a heritage site explorer, I visited Nepal last April with my friends. One of my friends had known Boundless Adventure and called Mr.Dambar. My friend told Mr.Dambar to suggest a tour of the heritage site. Mr.Dambar suggested a five-night, six-day plan to tour Nepal’s heritage. Per our request, he customized our itinerary and provided a never-to-be-forgotten experience. Our heritage tour had a satisfying blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Our journey begins with a tour of Kathmandu’s four significant heritage sites. Then, we moved to Chitwan National Park, where we experienced biodiversity, rare flora, and fauna. The tour was becoming super exciting, and we planned to extend it, but we couldn’t extend it due to time limits. But we are preparing for the next tour in Nepal with Boundless Adventure.
