List of UNESCO heritage sites in Nepal.

There are altogether 10 UNESCO heritage sites in Nepal. Among these 7 are located within Kathmandu Valley while the other 3 are spread across the country. These heritages are classified into natural and historical heritages based on their significance.

1) Pashupatinath
Dedicated to the prominent Hindu deity, Lord Shiva, Pashupatinath is a shrine sacred to Hindus. The literal translation of Pashupatinath is Lord of animals. This shrine is believed to have been built around 400 A.D. Styled in alluring pagoda style, there are over 500 temples scattered along the area. The temple is built on the bank of the Bagmati River which is one of the tributaries of the holy River of Hindus.

2) Swayambhunath
The name Swayambhunath translates to “self-existent” and this unique Buddhist monument is believed to have emerged by itself. The present-day monument dates back to 460 A.D. This monument is situated at the western end of Kathmandu Valley and rises above 100 meters from the surface level of Kathmandu Valley.

A mythological statement advocates that Swayabhunath was born out of a lotus flower that emerged in the middle of Kathmandu Lake. It has since been a revered site for Buddhist pilgrims. Swayambhunath stupa portrays an architectural magnificence in its architecture. This stupa is based on a dome followed by a cube structure which is pointy at the top. The cube is painted in all directions signifying the eyes of Buddha and the whole structure is decorated with Buddhist prayer flags.

3) Boudhanath
Boudhanath is a significant Buddhist shrine that stands as the biggest Buddhist monument in Nepal. Located in the northeastern end of Kathmandu Valley, this shrine is a revered site for Buddhist pilgrims. The centerpiece of Boudhanath has a pyramid-shaped stupa built on top of a dome.

This stupa is encircled by a circular path which is called “Kora” meaning walking in circles. The outer vicinity of the stupa is filled with spinning prayer wheels which you will find in most Buddhist sites. As a revered site and touristic destination, Boudhanath is famed for its religious significance and artistic marvels.

4) Kathmandu Durbar Square
Durbar Square refers to the complex of palaces, temples, courtyards, and shrines. Kathmandu Durbar Square is a historical monument that portrays the art and craft of the Malla regimes built between the 12th and 18th century A.D. These palaces served as royal residences during the Malla regime and stand as a living museum today.

Mallas are considered as higher caste Newars and the detailing of art and architecture of the palace depicts typical Newari artworks. Hanuman Dhoka Palace, Kumari Chok, Taleju Temple, Basantapur Tower, and Kal Bhairav Temple are the most prominent shrines here.

5) Patan Durbar Square
Patan is the royal residence of the ancient Lalitpur kingdom. Patan Durbar Square portrays a complex of royal palaces, Hindu shrines, architectural buildings, and artifacts that date centuries ago. Similar to Kathmandu Durbar Square, this area has been preserved as a historical landmark site with its astounding artistic amusement. This area is situated to the south of Kathmandu across the Bagmati River.

The Durbar Square consists of centuries-old monuments that include: Krishna Temple, Patan Museum, Mul Chok, Golden Temple, Mahaboudhha Temple, and Kwa Bahal. As a UNESCO heritage site, the ambiance in and around the Durbar Square takes you way back to the times of ancient Malla kings.

6) Bhaktapur Durbar Square
Nestled about 15 kilometers to the west is another Newari kingdom, Bhaktapur. Locally called “Bhadgaon”, this historic city is rich in culture, tradition, and history. Portraying a similar aura as Kathmandu Durbar Square and Patan Durbar Square, there are a series of temples, palaces, and monuments that dates back to the time of Malla kings between the 12th and 18th century.

The once administrative hub and royal residence of Bhaktapur is now a keynote attraction for travelers. 55 window palace, Vatsala Temple, Nyatapola Temple, Bhairav Nath Temple, and Singha Durbar are among the notable monuments of Bhaktapur Durbar Square.

7) Changunarayan
Changunarayan is one of the oldest Hindu shrines in Kathmandu Valley devoted to the Hindu deity, Lord Vishnu. It dates back to the 4th century by the Licchavhi dynasty kings. The architecture of this temple is none like what you would find elsewhere in Kathmandu. It blends in the artistic amusement of the Licchavi and Malla dynasties giving it an authentic shape. Doors, windows, pillars, roofs, and struts of the main temple portray amazing architectural shapes.

8) Lumbini
Lumbini has been a significant monument across the globe for its revered history. This site has been a sacred site for Buddhists for long. This area is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Buddha and is filled with architectural structures built all over. The core location of Lumbini is marked by Mayadevi temple which is believed to be the birthplace of Siddartha Gautam Buddha. There are various Buddhist monuments scattered all along the area. Also, the main area of Lumbini is filled with ponds and water bodies all over the area.

9) Sagarmatha National Park
Sagarmatha National Park encapsulates the floral and geographical diversity of Solukhumbu district in east Nepal. Home to some of the rarest species and towering mountains, this national park is filled with natural gems not found elsewhere.

With Mt. Everest (8848.86m) sitting tall at the edge, this national park homes the tallest mountain in the world.
